SUMMER EVENT AT NDSU HORTICULTURE RESEARCH FARM  

Twenty-seven members of NDNGLA enjoyed educational seminars and a walking tour of NDSU Horticulture Research Farm near Absaraka on July 30, 2021. 

Dr. Esther McGinnis of NDSU spoke on Ornamental Grasses for Tough Sites and Pollinator Plants.  Dr. Harlene Hatterman-Valenti spoke on High Value Crops: Hemp,Grapes and Other Fruits.  Dr. Todd West discussed New Landscape Plants.              

Attendees enjoyed a delicious supper provided by Swedberg Nurseries. 

The first photo below shows Dr. West (at right) describing some of the trees at the Research Farm.  In the next photo, Dr. Harlene Hatterman-Valenti shows members the hemp greenhouse.

Best Booth Awards

Best Booth--Alta Falls

Irv and Ben Geffre did a really nice job on their Alta Falls booth, as always, and received the First Place Best Booth Award!

Second Place Best Booth--Dakota College at Bottineau

Keith Knutson, Apryl Nylander, and their students from Dakota College in Bottineau teamed up to receive the Second Place Best Booth Award this year.

 

 

Third Place Best Booth--Central Landscape

Herman and Pauli Roerick set up another excellent Central Landscape display to win the Third Place Best Booth Award.

Scholarship Winners

Harry C. Baker Memorial Scholarship

The 2019 – 2020 recipient of the Harry C. Baker Memorial Scholarship at NDSU is Tran Zerface of Jamestown, ND.  Tran is a senior majoring in Horticulture with an emphasis in Sports and Urban Turfgrass Management.  Tran’s goal is to work at either a golf course or a soccer facility after graduation.

Nicholas N. Boehm Scholarship at Dakota College in Bottineau

 There were 2 recipients of the Nicholas N. Boehm Scholarship.

Zach Barnett started in the industry at Lowe’s Floral & Garden of Minot in the spring of 2014.  He currently works with the Minot Park District since 2016.  Zach plans to keep working for the Park District with the hope it will become full time.

 Isaac Perman is employed at Fort Stevenson State Park during the summer months as Dock Manager.  His job is to fix docks and the rental boats in addition to planting trees in the trail system.  Isaac is studying Horticulture and Forestry, and his goal is to work for the Corps of Engineers.
